Palo Alto, CA — The nonprofit organization CareerVillage.org announced today that it has recruited over 100,000 industry professionals serving as online volunteers. The US-based nonprofit organization’s volunteers have collectively provided career advice to over 6 million online learners. This underscores the growing trend of volunteering activities moving online, accelerated by the global pandemic and the shift to remote work culture.

Participation in virtual volunteering globally was increasing prior to the pandemic but 2020 greatly accelerated the pace of the social sector going digital and expanded their reach. In response to the trend of learners spending more time at home and online, organizations like CareerVillage are increasingly using large-scale online volunteering to fulfill their missions. For studying from home and being unable to participate in extracurricular activities, the rise of volunteer-backed online services has led to fast, relevant, diverse answers to career questions available online.

Corporations are also playing a role in this shift. With the increasingly remote workforce, they are looking to match employees’ desire to give back with online volunteering opportunities. The organization cites this as one of the reasons behind significant support from large corporations like PwC, AT&T, Dell, Pfizer, Verizon, and others.

“It’s an amazing achievement for a virtual volunteering organization to have 100,000 volunteers on call to support youth. The desire to give back in new ways is there. We’re hoping even more professionals and groups to rise up and meet this demand.” said Jessica Pliska, a CareerVillage.org Board Member.

Representatives from CareerVillage.org noted that even with a large volunteer base there are areas where they still need more volunteer supply, including healthcare providers. “We’re hoping many more will join in.” said YoonJi Kim, CareerVillage.org’s Director of Operations.
